A Hug Like Yesterday: Mike’s Story

Mike’s parents were older when he was born, and both were deaf. From a young age, he learned sign language to communicate with them, but as he grew into his teenage years, expressing his anxieties and emotions became increasingly difficult. Struggling to be understood, he found himself in the wrong crowd.

At just 13 years old, Mike came to live with us. He became part of our family, alongside the seven other boys God had placed in our care. Despite the six-hour distance from his parents, he remained happy and content, visiting them every four to five months.

Then came the day that changed everything.

One afternoon, before the kids got home from school, Mike’s counselor arrived unexpectedly. He had received a phone call from a neighbor of Mike’s parents—his mother had passed away suddenly that morning.

My heart sank.

Now, we had to wait for the school bus to arrive and find a way to tell him.

Mike walked through the door laughing with the other boys about something that had happened at school, completely unaware of what we were about to say. I distracted the other boys with cookies and milk before gently pulling Mike aside.

As we sat him down and broke the news, I will never forget the way that teenage boy sobbed in my arms.

The next morning, as the other kids grabbed their backpacks and headed out the door for school, Mike didn’t move. He lingered by my side.

When the house was finally quiet, he looked up at me and said,
“I need another hug like yesterday.”

I didn’t hesitate.

“Yes, Mike,” I told him, wrapping him in my arms. “You can have another hug—and as many hugs as you need.”

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the moments when love speaks louder than words. We pray for children like Mike, who need comfort, stability, and a place to feel safe. Lord, we ask that You bring new houseparents to fill the empty homes in children’s ministries across the country. May more children find arms ready to embrace them, homes filled with patience and love, and mentors willing to stand in the gap. We pray this in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
