A Story of Healing: Charlotte’s Journey
written by Geneva Brewer, former house parent
Charlotte was just 15 years old when she was placed in our home. She carried a weight no child should ever have to bear—she had accidentally started a fire that took the life of her little brother.
Her family was filled with tension, blame, and overwhelming grief. And Charlotte, caught in the middle of it all, didn’t know how to process the guilt she carried.
But in our home, she saw something different.
She watched daily examples of mercy, grace, and love in the interactions between the other children in care, as well as with our own infant and toddler. Little by little, we built a healing relationship—one where she could receive both praise for her strengths and consequences for her actions without feeling like she was constantly being punished for her past.
With the stability and structure we provided, Charlotte made incredible progress through both individual and family counseling.
Eventually, she was successfully reunified with her family.
Her story is a reminder that even the heaviest burdens can be lifted in a place filled with love, grace, and healing.
Heavenly Father, we lift up children like Charlotte—those carrying burdens too heavy for their young hearts to bear. We ask that You place them in homes where grace and healing can take root. Lord, we pray for new house parents to step into this calling, to offer stability, patience, and unconditional love to children who need it most. May every child in crisis find safety and hope. We pray this in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
