Stories from a House Mom: Susie’s Journey

Written by Helga Nelson, Former Houseparent

When Susie came to us, she was an angry 14-year-old ninth grader, carrying the weight of a difficult past and the challenge of cultural differences. She was Chinese, and though she spoke English, her accent made communication difficult at times. As a foreigner myself, I understood the deep frustration of wanting to express feelings but struggling to find the right words.

Susie’s journey started in China and led her through an unsuccessful older child adoption, leaving her feeling displaced and uncertain. Older children often just want to belong, yet their past experiences shape them in ways that make change difficult. Susie was fiercely independent, a talented track runner, and the kind of helper any foster mom would dream of. She was hardworking, dedicated, and always willing to lend a hand wherever needed.

Despite her guarded nature, Susie gravitated toward people who could guide her toward success. At church, youth camps, and community gatherings, she instinctively sought out adult mentors who could help her build the future she envisioned for herself.

Determined to forge her own path, Susie joined the JROTC program in high school with a clear goal: to become a soldier. She developed a close friendship with an Army recruiter and, after graduating, she fulfilled her dream by enlisting in the military.

Over the years, we kept in touch, following her journey as she served our country in Japan, Germany, and across the U.S. A decade later, medical challenges led her to leave the Army, bringing her back to the community where her journey with us first began. Today, she serves as a local mail carrier, a constant presence in our neighborhood, and a cherished part of our lives.

We are incredibly blessed to have been part of Susie’s story—to have witnessed her growth, resilience, and determination. She may have come to us as an uncertain teenager, but she left as a strong, capable young woman, charting her own course in the world.

A Prayer of Gratitude: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Susie and the countless children like her who seek belonging and purpose. We are grateful for the opportunity to walk alongside them, to provide love, encouragement, and guidance. Lord, we ask that You continue to bring compassionate foster parents into these children’s lives, and that You bless and strengthen those who answer this calling. May we always be reminded of the lasting impact of love and stability. We pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
